Mercedes
G-Klasse 230G
Project Summary
Vehicle manufactured in 1980, came in workshop with the request of full restoration together with a retrofiting of a 230 Kompressor engine and 722.6 automatic gearbox, on request of the customer.
Restauration time: 950 hours.
Vehicle was delivered already sandblasted completely dismantled.
Most of the work was required in the field of body work since many items were damadged by rust and previous repairs which were not carried on correctly.
After replacement of many new or manufactured parts, the body was prepared for painting.
At the same time, for new powertrain install, were done all jobs required for engine and gearbox mounts, exhaust system, etc.
After body paint, next step was the modification of electrical system in order to keep the vehicle with original aspect even on the inside, with original ignition switch and key, original instrument cluster, but modern engine. For this, a 230G engine speed gauge was installed, and on the engine a special thermocouple calibrated to the instrument cluster temperature gauge. Same job was required for the oil pressure sensor.
Gearbox function is assured by a standalone controller which have the software developed exactly for this particular case.
All necessary brackets for various parts like throttle position sensor, coolant expansion tank, intercooler, and so were manufactured and powdercoated.
Coolant radiator and intercooler were designed to match as best as possible with available space, keeping into acount the fact that it will also need to be efficient during offroad activities where vehicle speed is low, and engine heat is greater. For safety reason there was installed a electrical fan controled based on a thermocouple, in order to keep engine at a good operating temperature even in worst heat conditions.
Refurbished body trims, headlights, taillights were installed, to obtain a new classic look.
Overhauled transfer case and axles by means of bearings and seals replacement, together with gear play and contact pattern check.
Replaced the interior parts.
Reupholstered front seats.
Test drive!
Vehicle is now located in Netherlands and used as a daily driver.
