Unimog U411

Project Summary

Vehicle manufactured in 1960, it was involved in restoration process related to body, transmission and engine restoration and electrical system.

Restoration time: 890 hours.

Vehicle was completely disassembled and during this process all damaged parts or missing parts were noted. It is to mention that the project had to be done within a reduced budget, so the jobs carried on were related only to parts which need attention, repair or replacement.

The body was in an extremely bad condition with rust present in all elements, fact which lead to the best solution to rebuild almost entire body, except front end with dashboard. Paint was stripping from reused parts using chemical materials, and after this a smooth sandblast process was used to prepare the surface for next procedures.

It was required to replace the entire sub-frame of body, floor panels, inner fenders, side panels and doors.

The engine needed main bearings replacement and crankshaft machining to the 2nd repair stage. Engine block was bored to 1st repair stage and honed to match the new pistons. Cylinder head was face machined and valve seats were machined. 4 valves needed replacement.

Injection pump nozzles need replacement. Injection pump was clogged due to more than 15 years of no function, needed complete dismantling, replacement of all seals and gaskets, replacement of vacuum membrane used in injection pump regulator and a fine adjustment in all operation conditions.

On transmission assembly the jobs carried on were related to gaskets and seal rings replacement, some bearings needed replacement in gearbox.

The electrical system was completely replaced due to a way too much corroded original wiring. New headlamps and tail lamps are installed. New switches in dashboard for lights and wiper.

Seats needed new frames, springs, foam and covers. New soft-top installed.

In the end the vehicle body is painted orange, with black powder coated elements, and chassis including all transmission parts are painted black.

The car is stored in Holland.
